Having implemented the Seesaw application with my 5th grade writing students, I found the site quite easy to use (both for teacher and student). I particularly like the fact that students have a digital portfolio in which they have complete access. Additionally, as a writing teacher, I really appreciate the simplicity it provides. No more lugging around heavy writing folders! Moreover, students are provided quicker feedback. Check out the website here!
Below you will see a few screenshots of my classroom Seesaw app and how it looks as a teacher.
After my 5th grade students completed a personal narrative essay, I had them create a word cloud using the words from their essay. This was a fun activity to both celebrate their writing and uncover the "key" words in their writing essay.
We used the site www.wordclouds.com and had great success! It was a simple process. The students copied and pasted their essay into a designated textbox on the website. Then, presto! A word cloud is created!
Below you will see a few student samples. As you will notice, the students had the ability to choose a specific image to frame their word cloud. Additionally, they had control over the font coloring.
My 5th grade reading class read the novel Maniac Magee. To build background knowledge I focused on three main themes that are presented throughout the novel: homelessness, segregation, and legends and folktales. After hearing about ThingLink and its interactive image capabilities, I set up an image that embedded several children's books highlighting the themes.
Setting up the interactive image was quite easy. I used the novel's book cover illustration as the background image. (I found the image through Google.) Next, I researched the picture books on YouTube that highlighted the themes: homelessness, segregation, and legends and folktales.
Below you will see the ThingLink I created.
